“Miss Spencer. This is Penelope of elovepro.com. I have spoken with the owner, and he has a proposal.”
“So I gathered,” I said. “I want my money back.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Penelope said, her voice the epitome of happy patience. “I understand completely. I believe we have pinpointed the reason you’ve met with some of our more colorful clients and have missed your perfect match.”
“Because you let any biped with a bank account join up?” I asked.
“Because you have indicated your current career on your questionnaire.”
I shook my head, trying to understand what that had to do with anything. “Huh?”
“Taking that response out of the equation, we believe we have found a more appropriate match for you, in fact, I believe, your perfect elovepro match.”
“Oh brother,” I said.
“And we would like you to give this client an opportunity to meet you. We believe this date will give us a better understanding of the problem and show you what our service truly provides for all of our clients.”
“Headaches and nausea?”
“A perfect match,” Penelope said, and the thought went through my mind that she meant headaches and nausea were a perfect match. Doubt that was what she meant, but I laughed anyway.
“We ask that you agree to one more outing after which we will stand by our guarantee.”
I wanted to keep an open mind, but Penelope’s happy tone had started to grate on my nerves, and I’d had my mind opened a little wider than I wanted already. That’s when the idea came to me.
